Gift of Time Holiday Family Night Planned at WCCC

By Lura Jackson

Recognizing that the true value of the holidays is the opportunity to share in appreciation for one another, the students of Washington County Community College’s Supervisory Management class have organized the Gift of Time Holiday Family Night. The family-centric evening will include a movie, free gifts to children, concessions and raffles. All proceeds from the concession and raffle sales will go toward Stuff the Bus, an initiative that collects and distributes presents to local children.

“The purpose of our project is to provide gifts to children,” explained Bethany Borden. “We, as a group, agreed that nothing is more valuable than the gift of time with loved ones.”

The event is completely free to attend and includes cookie decorating and a showing of the 1966 classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The first 100 children to attend will be presented with a free gift. Available concessions include popcorn, sweets and drinks. Raffle tickets for a movie basket containing How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie box set, two tickets to State Cinemas in Calais, several boxes of candy, a box of popcorn, a blanket and a Happy Crab gift certificate can be purchased throughout the evening. A second raffle for an eagle photograph stretched on canvas is also planned.

Along with providing an evening of family-friendly quality time, the students felt it was important to support Stuff the Bus with the raffle and concession sales. “We chose to donate to Stuff the Bus because the cause means a lot to all of us,” Borden said. “Washington County is such a close-knit community and we all know of someone who struggles this time of year. Christmas should be a time of joy and celebration, not stress. Programs like Stuff the Bus take that financial burden off of families so they can just enjoy the holiday. We also wanted to support the program because of Bob Fitzsimmons. Bob does so much for the community all year long and we wanted to help him in any way we could.”

The Gift of Time Holiday Family Night is planned for Friday, November 30th, from 5 to 8 p.m. Cookie decorating will be held in Room 301 in Riverview Hall while the movie will play in the Assembly Room.
