“Everybody needs a bed,” says Karyn Flood, who co-owns and operates Mattress by Appointment – Calais with her husband, Phil. With that, she has framed the basic philosophy of the newly-opened store, which focuses on providing high-quality beds to fit nearly any budget.

The store offers a large range of bed sizes and materials, from an “economy” foam to a gel bed that remains consistently cool, making it an ideal choice for those who get overheated at night. Box springs – or foundations as they’re now called – are also available, including split queen foundations for easier moving upstairs. Zoned gel dough pillows are now in store in both King and Queen sizes.

One of Mattress by Appointment’s most popular features is its financing system, which generates a high rate of approval and accumulates no interest in the first 100 days, the Floods explained. “Most people can’t afford it,” Phil said. “But with financing, they can. They come in and say, ‘I can only afford a $300 bed.’ They’ll leave with a $6-700 bed with a big smile on their face.” Anything in the store can be financed.

While Phil has several years of experience selling mattresses in the past, the couple didn’t set out to start a mattress store in Calais. The development emerged last winter when Phil was in the midst of snow plowing season, a job that keeps him up all night. “I’d get home and I couldn’t sleep,” he explained. “So I said, ‘Well, we need a new bed.’”

Phil didn’t have much success looking around town for a place to buy a bed, finding only one store. He found a place in Brewer called Mattress by Appointment, did some research and called them. When he was approved through the store’s financing system, he made the trip to purchase a bed.

Once there, he met Michele and Michael Phillips, who were mutually impressed with Phil’s extensive knowledge about mattresses. What began as a joke on Phil’s part about how if they had a store in Calais he could sell for them developed into a partnership.

After checking out a few places, the Floods found the former Curves in Calais. The well-lit, warm, clean building was perfect for their needs. It took six months to get everything set up. Finally, in September, they were ready to open. The Floods have had great success in their first month, selling 46 beds, Philip shared.

Unlike some other financing programs, the financing offered by Mattress by Appointment is reported on credit reports, making it a good option for those wishing to build their credit. Applying for financing does require the applicant to make $1,000 a month, have a debit card and have a checking account.

The relatively low qualifications for financing are ideal for economically challenged areas like Washington County, and the wide appeal that the store has had so far is demonstrative of that. Customers have come from Princeton, Machias, Eastport, and all points in between.

For those lacking a vehicle, Phil will deliver locally at no charge – and he will travel out of town for no charge other than gas money.

“It’s not about us making money here,” Karyn said. “It’s about a service that this area really needs. Somebody who cares.”
