Cancer-affected Community Members Sought for Support Study

If you or a loved one have recovered from cancer, or if you are currently contending with cancer or are the caretaker for someone that is, your input is requested for a unique cancer support services survey to be conducted in the classroom at Calais Regional Hospital on August 29th from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The Christine B. Foundation is performing the survey to be able to assess what needs there are for cancer support services in our community.

According to Marianne Moore, Cancer Patient Navigator for Healthy Acadia, Washington County has the highest incidence of cancer in the state, prompting the need for community input. “There are so many people in our area who have been affected by cancer,” Moore provided.  “Unfortunately, they have to travel to Bangor, Brewer, Ellsworth, Augusta, Portland, or even Boston for surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments.” The required travel is a major hardship on many families.

Because of the high incidence of cancer and the remoteness of our area, the Christine B. Foundation received a grant to conduct surveys around the county to hear from affected community members and establish how much need there is. “The hope is to measure the patient, caregiver and survivor experience and their needs in regard to cancer support services,” Moore said. “This will help them get a baseline as well as give them the direction on how they can help our community.”

Moore said that Christine B. Foundation founder and president Matt Dexter aims to build “Christine’s Village” – named in honor of his mother, who died from cancer – in Brewer to provide the services that are determined to be most needed after the survey results are collected.

“Participation in assessments such as this are very important for those of us in Down East Maine to share our concerns and needs,” Moore said.

All participants in the study must first register by calling (207) 947-9333 ext. 102. Participants will receive a $25 gift card for their time and input. Light refreshments will be available.
