Holmes Cottage Museum Now Open for Season

Offering a look at life in the 1800s is the unique Holmes Cottage Museum on Main Street. Built around the turn of the 18th century, the cottage was the home of the first doctors to practice in Calais. By the 1850s it was the office of Dr. Job Holmes, who commissioned architect Asher Bassford to build the Holmestead next to it for more room for his family. The cottage now houses several artifacts from the era, including Dr. Holmes's record book and medicines. Admittance is at no cost and a curator is generally available if desired.
