Learn to Make a Seaman’s Scarf at Calais Free Library

By Natalie Boomer

“If you’re interested in learning how to knit, or just hanging out and knitting with people, call the library!” said Deb Thomas. On Saturdays May 5th and 12th, the Calais Free Library will be holding a knitting class for beginners teaching participants how to make a seaman’s scarf. The classes will start at 10 a.m. and go until 11:30 a.m.

Deb Thomas will be providing the yarn, instructions, and the knitting needles for those who would like to participate. “My students will knit a seaman’s scarf, which is a scarf that has ribbing in the center so it will hug your neck, and I’m going to teach them to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. When they finish the scarfs, they will have all of the skills they need to knit something bigger, something more complex,” said Thomas.

“It’s mainly for people who either do not know how to knit, or maybe lack confidence in their abilities and just want a simple project. Or maybe they just want a nice warm scarf,” said Thomas.

There are five more spots available for those who would like to join. You can sign up by going to, or calling, the library at 207-454-2758.
