Devotional - “Heaven: I Want to Be There”

John 14:2-3    “In My Father’s House are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

When I was a young child, there was a gentleman at my church who was always smiling and always laughing. His name was Prince Ogbonna. He was from Nigeria and he loved music. I always enjoyed hearing him sing at church because he showed great enthusiasm and joy and he wasn’t ashamed to show it.

One of the songs he wrote is titled “Heaven – I Want to Be There” and it quickly became one of my favorite songs. As he sang it, I could picture Heaven in my mind. No more sorrow, no more tears, and no more sickness. An eternity of praising God with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

I hadn’t thought of the song in a while, but then, something happened recently that brought it back to my mind. A very godly, very loving, very compassionate woman of God went home to be with the Lord. She left behind lots of loved ones and friends whose lives she had touched in many ways, including mine. Years ago, when I returned from Iraq, I went through a very difficult time and I thought about giving up. This woman and her husband were two of the folks who reached out to me, and God used them to encourage and bless me. They invited me over many times, fed me some good home-cooked meals, and even let me sleep in the guest room a few times.

So as I’ve thought about the impact this woman of God had during her time on Earth, I smile because I know she’s personally heard Christ’s words, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter in to the joy of thy Lord!” Instead of singing, “Heaven, I want to be there”, she now can sing, “Heaven, I am now in Heaven” as she sings praises to our Lord!
