Gary Norman Saunders, 83, of Ellington, passed Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, with his son Guy by his side.

He was born June 1, 1934, in Calais, Maine, son of Guy and Verna (Grant) Saunders. He was preceded in death by four sisters; Muriel, Charlotte, Beverly, and Phoebe; and a brother, Grant Saunders.

Gary was a graduate of Calais High School Class of 1952 and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. He married Joanne Almeada Crossman on Aug. 11, 1956. There were married almost 56 years. Joanne passed May 20, 2012.

A graduate of Yale New Haven School of Radiology in 1956, he worked in the field as a teacher and as an x-ray technician for 44 years, retiring from Rockville General Hospital. In 1963, Gary had the opportunity to teach in Beirut, Lebanon at the School of Radiological Technology, American University.

He is survived by three children, Lynn Blauvelt, Lewis and Guy Saunders; two grandchildren, Ashley and Nathaniel Blauvelt; a great-grandson, Aiden James Blauvelt.

Gary was an avid golfer, loved woodworking, playing cards, hiking throughout New England, and growing roses. He was a great man and a great father.

Burial will be June 1st at the Calais Cemetery. A service was held Saturday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Ellington Baptist Church.
