Devotional

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I thoroughly enjoy the sport of snowmobiling. For our family, winter isn’t a time of year to dread but rather one we look forward to with great anticipation. Recently, my two sons, ages nine and six, have begun riding machines on their own. This was a big step for them. We picked up a couple of kid sized machines that are perfect for them to learn on but yet they aren’t without risk. Because of this, each of my sons began their snowmobiling experience with some ground rules—some guidelines that we put in place to keep them from getting hurt. The rules aren’t there to hinder their experience but rather to enhance and prolong it.

In the same way that I gave my sons directions on how to safely ride their snowmobiles, God has given each of us instructions on how best to live our lives. Those instructions are found in the verses of The Bible. God’s word contains the guidelines we need to live the best life possible—A life that avoids the traps and snares that entangle so many of us. No one knows better than God how to do this thing called “life”.

Many people look at God’s “rules” and think of them as just that—rules; a list of do’s and don’ts. They feel like God doesn’t want them to enjoy life at all or have any fun. When I gave my boys a safety lecture and told them where they could and couldn’t go, it wasn’t because I desired to squash any fun they were about to have. I did it because I love them. I love them so much that I want them to be safe. I want them to avoid hazards or situations that I know can happen but that they can’t yet see. My rules were guardrails to keep them from getting hurt. God’s motivation for giving us his law is the same. He truly loves his creation—He truly loves you!

Along the way we’re going to mess up and bust through those guardrails and careen into trouble. Both of my boys have had their first minor crashes by not following the rules. In both cases I was there to pick them up, encourage them and get them back on course. God is there to do the same for us. Our heavenly father has made it possible for all of us to start again because of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only one that never crashed through God’s guardrails. He’s the only one that never strayed from the course, and He stands ready to get you back on the right track. I encourage you to take Him up on the offer today.

Blessings!
