Raymond L. Lyons 79, passed away at his home on April 21, 2015 in Granada, Nicaragua of natural causes.  He was born on May 21, 1935, in Houlton, Maine to Olive Kelly Lyons and Ralph Alan Lyons.  He attended school in Houlton, Maine and Leominster, Mass. Upon graduation he joined the US Marine Corp for three years serving time in Japan. He then worked as a construction worker on the N.Y. State seaway for two years.  He graduated from Utica Technical Institute in 1961, and was employed at General Electric in Utica, NY as an electronics technician.  In 1966 he joined the Border Patrol in San Ysidro, California.  He spent 25 years employed in the Border Patrol in Maine, Vermont and California, retiring in 1990.

Ray was an avid reader with a continual thirst for knowledge.  He received a Bachelors in English from Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California, and in 1990 he received his Masters in English from Texas University. He then attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia where he taught computer skills and fraud.

One of Ray’s main interests was his love of animals, namely his favorite horse Appy, and his special dogs Mooch, Sooty, and Mittens. He also enjoyed judo, camping, fishing, shooting little falls on the St. Croix River, and hunting.  Many of Ray’s favorite times were at the family camp.  The camp was his pride and joy and the family remembers many eventful cross country trips from California to Maine to get there for summer vacations. While living in El Centro, California he was a member of the Imperial Valley Sheriff’s Posse, participating in rescues, reenactments, and parades. He started Judo clubs in both Topsfield and Calais, Maine. Both teaching and competing in the sport. He was a second degree black belt and won 1st in his weight division in the State of Maine.  

Ray is survived by Ann Lee Lyons, mother of his four children; Erin Flannery of Hampden, Kelly Lowe & husband Tim of Princeton, Shawn Lyons and his wife Sylvina of Beals Island, and Tracy Bergmann and her husband Daryl of Auburn, 6 grandchildren, Chad Dwelley and wife Katie, Raynel Dwelley, Andi Flannery, Harold Lyons, Shawn Handler, Samuel Lyons and 2 great Grandchildren, Reagan and Gavin Dwelley, a sister Elizabeth Sheasly and her children Patrick Egan and wife Evangline and Roberta DeGreve, and husband Dale; and cousins Robert Lyons and wife Sharon, Janet Sirois and husband Tom, David Lyons and wife Karen.

Ray was predeceased by infant son, Kerry Lyons; his Mother, Olive Pappas; his Father, Ralph Lyons and Brother, William Lyons.  


Ray will be remembered by family in a private ceremony per his wishes.
