Baptist Church Hosts Hyssongs for Christmas Concert

By Lura Jackson

On Saturday, December 13th, the nationally renowned gospel group the Hyssongs visited the Second Baptist Church to give a seasonally-themed Christmas concert at no cost to the community. The concert was well attended with upwards of a hundred guests enjoying the harmoniously glorious hymns sung by the threesome.

The Hyssongs is composed of family members that have been singing together for over 18 years, and their talent is widely recognized. Earlier this year, they were awarded with the Top New Trio at the 2014 Singing News Fan Awards. Several of their songs have made national Top 40 charts for Southern Gospel music.

The concert was arranged through the efforts of music coordinator Issie Gibson. Fifteen years ago, Gibson began contacting national and regional bands to ask them if they would come to Calais in an effort to bring gospel music to the community. Though Gibson told the bands that the church could not afford to pay a fee and that the performers would only receive donations, not a single band refused the offer. Every month since then, the Second Baptist Church has hosted a musical guest for the enrichment of the area.

Following the concert, guests feasted upon a spread of refreshments donated and prepared by members of the church, including numerous sandwiches, pastries, cookies, and other assorted treats.

Though this is the last concert of the year featuring professional musicians, there will be a children’s concert on December 21st at 6 pm.
