MACHIAS, Maine -- The Downeast Christmas Festival events, held Dec. 5-7, were determined to be an overall success at a meeting of organizers held Monday. The group will begin meeting again in May 2014 to begin planning next year’s event. The organizers recognized several local groups and businesses, and credited them with making the three days of events a success. They were: Machias Savings Bank, Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce, Lee Pellon Center, Machias Memorial High School JMG Program, Rose M. Gaffney REACH Program, University of Maine at Machias, Albee Tree Farm, Hannaford’s Supermarket, Roque Bluffs Community Choir, Down East Correctional Center and Berry Vines.

Events included a nighttime parade, a singing contest, a community Christmas tree lighting and caroling, crafts and activities for children, an Ugly Sweater Dance, and a visit with Santa Claus that included a keepsake photo.

The winners of the parade, held Saturday, Dec. 7, were: first - Carter Ridge Kennels; second - Downeast Youth Soccer Association; and third - Bluebird Ranch.

The first annual Voice of Down East Maine contest had more than 40 entries and was held at the University of Maine’s Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Dec. 6. The winners also sang at the well-attended lighting of the community Christmas tree on Friday, Dec. 7,

Voice winners were: Ages 5-12 - first, Elexis Dubois; second, Noah Carver; third; Jaimie Fairchild & McKenna Robinson; Ages 13-18 - first, Meghan Clark; second, Hailey Cates-Wright; third, Will Somes and Kasara Decker; Ages 19 and over - first, Martha Cummings; second, Mindy Reynolds; third, Ryan Murray and Landon Knittweis.
