PTO Once Again Making a Presence in Calais School System

By Jayna Smith

A Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has once again formed to serve the Calais school system.  PTOs are formal organizations made up of parents, teachers, and school staff.  Its mission in Calais is to develop enthusiastic and valuable relationships between parents and the school staff for the expressed purpose of benefiting the children.

Initiated by parent Jennifer Fleming, the group recently held its first meeting at Calais Elementary School and big plans are underway.  “It was a very positive and productive meeting,” Fleming said.  “Everyone there had a common goal of supporting the school while providing fun and cultural experiences to our children.”

In addition to brainstorming for upcoming events and fundraisers, the group planned details for a fun movie night.  Students at CES will soon be polled to learn what movie they would like to watch on the big screen.  Once the date is confirmed, kids will be encouraged to come dressed in PJs and cozy clothes for a great family movie night free of charge.

Fleming explained that with the proposed budget cuts, she hoped a PTO could help fill some of those cuts with events focusing on such topics as art and music.  She also hopes to create more of a sense of community and cooperation between parents and teachers.  “As I did a little more research, I felt like there was some disconnect between parents and teachers.  I want the PTO to bridge that gap and build a positive community for our children, school staff, and parents.”

The next PTO will be held at Calais Elementary School on October 24th.  Start time is 6:30 and there is no cost involved in becoming a member of the organization.
