Library News

The Calais Free Library has a variety of great programs scheduled for October that are free and open to the public.  Our featured artist for the entire month is Patricia Caldwell, who is a quilter extraordinaire.  Anyone familiar with her artistry will be captivated with her newest display located in the Art Gallery.  Starting Tuesday, October 15th, from 9 am to 10:30, we will be offering free Photoshop classes to anyone who is interested in learning how to manipulate photographs.  The classes will run each Tuesday for five weeks.  On Wednesday, October 16th from 6pm to 8 pm, we will kick off a series Beginner’s QuickBooks classes.  QuickBooks is a great tool for tracking expenses. The Monday Morning Knitters will meet this month on October 21st starting at 9:30 am. This is a delightful time for knitters and crocheters to gather together to show off projects and to swap patterns.  Hopefully, everyone is aware of “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate” program set up for Wednesday, October 23, 2013 starting at 10 am and running until 11:30 am.  The Book Lovers’ Café will meet on Wednesday, October 30th from 9:30 am to 11 am.  I am looking forward to sharing the two new authors I have discovered this month: Louise Penny and Henning Mankell.

For people interested in learning more about the Affordable Care Act a.k.a. ObamaCare, the library will be hosting another workshop with presenter Deborah Shields, the outreach and enrollment coordinator from Eastport Health Center.  This workshop will be on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 3 pm to 5 pm.  Drop in at any point during that time slot to ask questions or to get help setting up an online account in the Health Insurance Marketplace.  For those who are not computer savvy, Deborah can help you sign up for insurance using paper and pen.

Lots of entertaining activities are planned for the children’s section of the library.  The Wiggles and Giggles program is scheduled every Friday morning and runs from 10:30 am to 11:00.  This program is geared toward babies, toddlers, and preschoolers and is filled with songs, stories, and a special craft.  On Friday, October 11th, we will have a special Wiggles and Giggles visitor who will bring his fire truck for families to check out.  Our theme for that day is fire safety.  Everyone is welcome.  If first through fourth graders haven’t visited Thursday Crafternoons, remember we have one more scheduled for Thursday, October 17th starting afterschool at 2:30 pm.  Show up and create a fun piece of art.

Don’t forget the best day of all: Halloween!  Get your costume ready and join us for the Annual Halloween parade on October 31st starting in front of the library at 3:30 pm.  There are lots of new Halloween storybooks we have added to our collection here at the library.  My personal favorite is The Perfect Pumpkin Pie by Denys Cazet.  A young boy and his grandmother are making pies on Halloween night and are haunted by a ghost who refuses to leave until he has tasted perfect pie.  This haunting story is chock full of scariness, humor and finally some good pie.  Celebrate your favorite holiday all month long by checking out some fun or maybe even some scary Halloween books.
