Machias 250th Birthday Week of Events

A full week of events - including concerts, contests, parades and art activities - are wrapped around the 9th annual Margaretta Day Festival this year to celebrate the 250th birthday of this historic and scenic community by the sea. Thousands are expected to visit Machias on the unspoiled Bold Coast from June 14-21 for “Back To Our Roots,” a celebration of Machias and its historic past.

All of the events are in Machias and all are family-friendly and free. “We have been planning events for more than a year and this is going to be one of the most special events in Maine this summer,” Sharon Mack, Chairman of the 250th Birthday said. “Machias is an area of incredible beauty and deep, rich history and is one of the jewels of Downeast, Maine. We welcome all historians, hikers and bikers, and families to this week long party.” Machias once included the towns of Machiasport, Whitneyville, Marshfield, and East Machias and all five towns have been working together on the celebration.

The 250th Birthday Celebration (www.facebook.com/Machias250thBirthdayCelebration) builds on the popular summer Margaretta Day Festival and Craft Fair, which commemorates the 1776 Battle of the Margaretta, the first naval battle of the American Revolution and the beginning of the Merchant Marines. It also honors the Battle of the Rim, when the British returned to burn down Machias and were defeated by patriots and the Passamaquoddy Tribal members. Named one of Yankee Magazine’s 2010 Top 20 Events, this festival features an encampment of soldier re-enactors, period demonstrations such as blacksmithing, timber framing, weaving, Passamaquoddy Tribal members, entertainment, children’s activities, food, music, and contemporary crafters and artists.
