School Field Trip & Sponsorship Opportunities in May

The Cobscook Community Learning Center, along with Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and other local businesses and organizations, are planning the tenth annual Down East Spring Birding Festival to be held over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

This year MNWR, CCLC, Friends of Moosehorn, and Cobscook Bay State Park are collaborating to offer opportunities for schools to take advantage of the birding knowledge and expertise of guides and presenters familiar with our unique region of North America. Cobscook Bay State Park will offer the chance to build and maintain scientifically-accurate bird houses and to join park rangers on educational nature walks on the park’s trails.  Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge will host the Owls of Maine live bird presentations by the Chewonki Foundation of Wiscasset, as well as owl pellet dissection, eagle and osprey viewing, and educational bird games for grades K – 6.

Schools are invited to sign up to participate in field trips on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 8:30 – 11:00 am or 11:00 am – 1:30 pm.  Both the state park and wildlife refuge are excellent places for groups. School groups from the morning session are invited to stay late, and the afternoon session is invited to arrive early to enjoy a picnic lunch.

The birding festival planning committee also invites area businesses to participate in sponsorship of the field trip opportunities by donating funds for activity supplies or to the Chewonki Foundation presentations.

To schedule a field trip or become a sponsor, please contact Carrie at the CCLC by calling 733-2233 ext. 322, or by emailing carrie@thecclc.org.
